We aim to encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement in our activities. The roles of volunteers and paid staff are complementary and mutually supportive. The enthusiasm and commitment of volunteers greatly enhances our ability to care for our collections and make them accessible to the public.
Our volunteers record information about collections, upgrade the packing and storage of collections, number, label and photograph objects, support web site development, welcome visitors and assist with events and activities.

We can provide work experience placements for students in further and higher education. We regularly host museum and gallery studies students from university courses in the UK and abroad.
The service has also hosted four Dumfries and Galloway Council Modern Apprenticeships since 2012, and participates in Museums and Galleries Scotland funded trainee schemes. Follow us on social media for announcements and links to these opportunities.
Each year we recruit a number of temporary seasonal staff to welcome visitors to our venues over the summer months. A museums and galleries qualification is not usually necessary for these posts but good customer service skills are. The recruitment process starts in winter and these jobs are usually advertised in January or February each year. These posts are normally advertised in December through My Job Scotland. Follow us on social media for announcements and links to these opportunities.
Other museum and gallery vacancies are also advertise through My Job Scotland.
