A portrait of Jessy Lewars is on loan from East Ayrshire Leisure to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Robert Burns on 21 July 1796.
Jessy was the sister of one of the poet’s colleagues in the Excise Service. She was also a neighbour to the family when they moved to Mill Street in Dumfries (now Burns Street), becoming a close friend and helping with the children. She helped Jean Armour nurse her husband through his last illness and Burns wrote several poems to the music she played, including Inscription to Jessy Lewars,
“Thine be the volumes, Jessy fair,
And with them take the Poet’s prayer”
Newly conserved for this exhibition, the painting is the first of a programme of loans to the Robert Burns Centre from the Burns Scotland collection.
